On Sunday, Dec. 13, Massachusetts rolled back the economy to Step 1 of Phase 3 - a move that reduces restaurant capacity, and closes indoor performance spaces, among other things, according to an outline provided by the Governor's office.

Patrons in restaurants must now wear masks unless they are eating or drinking and masks must be worn in offices and gyms at all times unless a person is there alone.

A protest of the new regulations by restaurant industry workers was planned for today, Monday, Dec. 14, in Boston.

For restaurants, the new guidelines include:

  • Patrons must wear masks at all times unless eating or drinking
  • No more than six people per table
  • Guests can stay for no longer than 90 minutes
  • No musical performances at restaurants will be allowed
  • No food court seating in malls.

For other businesses, the more restrictive phase reduces their capacity and closes some businesses.

Businesses that have had to reduce their capacity from 50 percent to 40 percent include gyms, libraries, museums, retailers, offices, churches, and movie theaters.
